OSAC presents On Hallowed GroundPosted: March 6, 2008

On Hallowed Ground

Dennis Bruce, Diana Chabros, Chuck Crate, David Dreher, Lloyd Dubois, Don Hall, Iris Hauser, McGregor Hone, Edit Z. Ivan, Brian James, Ernest Lindner, Arthur McKay, Brenda Pelkey, Russell Yuristy, Debbie Wozniak-Bonk

From the Saskatchewan Arts Board Permanent Collection

Touring through the Organization of Saskatchewan Arts Councils (OSAC)

Curated by Aaron Clarke

Drawn from the Saskatchewan Arts Board Permanent Collection, On Hallowed Ground is a show that addresses notions of spirituality within the works of Saskatchewan artists. In a variety of media, the exhibition looks into what evokes the mystical approach in artmaking. Curator Aaron Clarke explains, "These are not the works of religions or churches, but rather of the resting place of the studio, where artists work in solitude." The works present "an invisible source of inspiration made visible. For as numerous of reasons as styles, this exhibition celebrates diversity of the individual", and the diversity of sources of spiritual inspiration. Clarke goes on to say, "From the blank and void page, these artists express some form of spiritual desire to make common what they alone perceive. Should we each today embrace ...notions of something greater, we would likely stand in appreciation of more things sacred to all who share this place, this ground."

Touring throughout Saskatchewan from February 2008 through to October 2009 to the following communities:
Shaunavon, Regina Beach, Kipling, Fort Qu’Appelle, Bengough, North Battleford, La Ronge, Prince Albert, Watrous, Canora, Rosthern, Assiniboia, Weyburn, Estevan and Melfort.

Touring through the Organization of Saskatchewan Arts Councils

Residency/Residency Renewal Phase:
The Residency Grant of $35,000 is awarded to organizations that have already undertaken the Development Phase. Residencies are 10-12 months and organizations may apply for renewal of up to an additional 12 months.

Applications and Information

More changes to the program will be announced in the coming months - we'll keep you posted!

SK Digital Alliance Launches WebsitePosted: December 12, 2007

Saskatchewan Digital Alliance launches its website

The Saskatchewan Digital Alliance (SDA) is pleased to announce the launch of their new website www.saskdigital.ca . This website is intended to make it easier for libraries, archives, museums and other institutions in Saskatchewan to find relevant information related to digitization. We are also launching a blog to provide updates on digitization activities in the province and to initiate a dialogue among people interested in digitization. A feed from the blog will appear on the website.

Features on the site include:

  • Information about digitization training and workshops;
  • An archive of training materials and resources from past workshops (i.e. the SDA's workshop at the 2007 SLA conference);
  • Information about Alouette Canada, including updates on the SDA's involvement with Alouette Canada;
  • Information about and updates on the Provincial Library's digitization grant program;
  • News and updates about digitization projects, workshops and developments;
  • Listing and description of Saskatchewan digitization projects created as part of the 2005 Digitization Inventory Project;
  • Information about joining the SDA listserv;

The Saskatchewan Digital Alliance (SDA) is a cross-sector, co-operative body that was initiated by the Multitype Library Board to promote and facilitate the development of digital collections in Saskatchewan. The SDA advises the Multitype Library Board on issues related to its strategic direction that aims to "expand access to content, including digitized information; broaden Multitype partnerships; and, build capacity of the partners."

Museums and Sustainable CommunitiesPosted: November 13, 2007

To those interested in how museums can position themselves to be catalysts of cultural change and contribute to the sustainability of their communities. In Canada, the Working Group on Museums and Sustainable Communities has been developing resources and delivering workshops to museum organizations on this topic for the past 7 years.

There is now a website that provides information on the Working Group and access to its most recent 'Resource Document' (as a downloadable pdf file).

For access to the Working Group's website, go to www.geocities.com/wgmsc

There are additional resources on culture and sustainability available through my own website, listed below.

The website for material related to the Working Group on Museums and Sustainable Communities has a daily limit for data transfer. It seems that there are a lot of people interested in the website and the daily limit for today has already been reached - which was also the case yesterday. My suggestion is to make a note to log on later in the week. Sorry for the hassle, but we don't have money for web-hosting, which is why we are using a free geocities hosting site.

If you send me an email, I will send you the main 'reference document' for the Working Group.

The Cultural Human Resources Council Online ToolsPosted: November 17, 2005
CHRC shines a light on Cultural Management

The Cultural Human Resources Council (CHRC) continues its work on cultural management with the release of a Competency Chart and Profile for Cultural Managers. Developed by experts in the field, these valuable tools will help managers, aspiring managers and educators to better understand and recognize the important leadership and managerial skills that cultural managers bring to their complex and demanding jobs.

The chart and profile can be found on the CHRC website at www.culturalhrc.ca/competencies/default-e.asp

The Council is also releasing the on-line interactive version of Careers in Cultural Management, which can be found on its web site at www.culturalhrc.ca/careersinculture/default-e.asp This is the first in a series of seven Careers in Culture online interactive books designed to interest young people in careers in the cultural sector.

Other research and resources in the area of cultural management can be found on CHRC’s web site, including a series of nine HR Tools for cultural organizations, a Board/Management Toolkit to help maintain the delicate balance between Boards and CEOs in cultural organizations; and a Compensation survey of arts administrators. In addition, CHRC has put a focus on management positions in the Youth Career Focus programme it administers on behalf of HRSDC and DCH.

CHRC will continue its focus in the area of cultural management with a study on succession in cultural organizations, and tools to assist in succession planning. The Council also plans to develop tools for mentorship to assist emerging managers to move into management positions under the guidance of senior management mentors.

Looking Reality in the EyePosted: June 21, 2005

The articles in this book are outstanding examples of socially responsible museum work, based on the premise that museums, galleries and science centres must move beyond education and entertainment to embrace socially relevant missions. Being a socially responsible museum means addressing issues of relevance to one’s community, as well as identifiying issues and challenges where a museum’s expertise can make a positive difference. This book presents nine rich and diverse case studies of successful civic engagement which are both practical and engaging. LOOKING REALITY IN THE EYE provides new directions for assisting museums in achieving long-term sustainability within their communities, while at the same time providing a rich source of ideas on how this can be achieved.

Robert R. Janes has a PhD in archaeology from the University of Calgary and is the former President and CEO of the Glenbow Museum in Calgary. He is the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Museum Management and Curatorship. Dr. Janes was the keynote speaker at the 2004 MAS Conference in Kamsack.

Gerald T. Conaty has a PhD in archaeology from Simon Fraser University. He is the Senior Curator of Ethnology at Glenbow Museum and an adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Archaeology at the University of Calgary.

Looking Reality in the Eye can be purchased online from the Museums Association of Saskatchewan under publications.
