As professionals who believe in the power of learning through play, we know how important engaging, fun, hands-on, interactive experiences are for children and for grown-ups. The 2008 conference theme is Learn to Play! Play to Learn!, taking a light-hearted approach to the serious issue of creating a truly innovative society in Canada. Friday's Keynote speaker is Silken Laumann - Olympic Medalist and Author of Child's Play. Mendel Art Gallery presents School Art - Mendel Art Gallery, 950 Spadina Cr. East, Saskatoon
2008-03-14 to 2008-06-01

For Immediate Release: March 13, 2008

School Art 2008 opens March 14 and continues until June 1, 2008

School Art is the annual exhibition of student art organized and presented by the Mendel Art Gallery, with the cooperation of the Saskatoon Public School Division and the Greater Saskatoon Catholic School Division.

The opening reception is on Sunday, March 16, 2008 at 2pm.
For over 30 years School Art has presented artworks by elementary and secondary students from Saskatoon's schools. The Mendel Art Gallery organizes this annual exhibition of paintings, drawings, photographs, and sculptures to acknowledge excellence in artmaking by Saskatoon's young people. The Mendel professionally presents the work-selected by jury-of approximately 200 students. We are proud to support schools in their efforts to validate and recognize artmaking as a serious and worthwhile endeavor.

The selection committee is composed of representatives from the Saskatoon Public School Division, Greater Saskatoon Catholic School Division, and a Mendel curator/art educator. This year's jurors were Kathy Bradshaw from Centennial Collegiate, Wendy Siemens from St. Joseph High School, and Laura Kinzel, the Mendel's Gallery Programmer. They choose at least two works from each school, with schools larger than 350 in population represented by three works. In addition, a limited number of art pieces were included on a merit basis.

School Art 2008 is sponsored by Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Inc.

About the Mendel Art Gallery
Overlooking the South Saskatchewan River, the Mendel Art Gallery is Saskatoon's premier destination for contemporary and historical art. The Mendel's permanent collection includes over five thousand local, regional, and national works of art. In addition to exploring exhibitions and associated pubic programs, visitors can browse the Gallery Shop, spend time in the Civic Conservatory, or relax with friends over tasty treats in Museo Café.

The Mendel's mandate is to operate and maintain in the City of Saskatoon a public museum for the collection, exhibition, preservation and interpretation of works of art and for the development of public understanding and appreciation of art. With over 150,000 visitors in 2007, the Mendel has one of the highest per-capita attendance rates in Canada.

The Mendel is open from 9am to 9pm daily except for Christmas Day. Admission is free. For more information on Mendel programs and events, call (306) 975-7610 or visit our website at www.mendel.ca .

The Mendel Art Gallery gratefully acknowledges the operating funding support of the City of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan Arts Board, Canada Council for the Arts, Canadian Heritage, and SaskLotteries.
