Canadian Museum Association National Conference - Call for Papers deadline September 13


The CMA's 2011 National Conference will be held in London Ontario from April 11-15! The conference's Evolve or Die theme aims to provide practical information about how to reorganize, rethink and regenerate our museums and galleries to increase audience engagement.

Strasbourg & District Museum Held a Day of Honour


This day brought the whole community out to honour World War II Veterens. Great community engagement, involving the dedication of the teachers and students of William Derby School, fundraising to sponsor plaques displayed at the Juno Beach Centre in France.

Saskatchewan Discovery Guide - Book your spot today! Deadline September 30

The advertising rates for the 2011 Saskatchewan Discovery Guide are now available! Following the same format as 2010, this publication merges the former Vacation Guide, Accommodation, Resort & Campground Guide, and Events Guide into a single book. Accolades for the Saskatchewan Discovery Guide have been received from industry, government, travellers, and stakeholders. For added exposure, the guide will again be posted on www.sasktourism.com, which receives over 700,000 unique visitors annually.

Saskatchewan Archives Board - Call for Papers Deadline September 15


Saskatchewan Archives Board (SAB) is planning to publish a special issue of its journal, Saskatchewan History, in the fall of 2010 to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Saskatchewan Roughriders (1910-2010).

You are invited to submit an article about any aspect of the history of the Roughriders, their fans, and their role in the community, for possible inclusion in this special issue.  Submissions may be scholarly papers which will be peer-reviewed; shorter, light-reading features highlighting people, places and events related to the team; or book reviews of Rider-related literature.

Canadian Conference of the Arts pre-budget submission


On Friday August 13, the Canadian Conference of the Arts (CCA) submitted its pre-budget brief for 2011 to the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance. In it, the CCA frames the manner in which the federal government should invest in arts and culture, and emphasizes the need for the government to continue its commitment of stable funding for arts and culture as we come to the end of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.

Canada's Got Treasures! The Four Indian Kings

The portraits of the "Four Kings" are among the earliest surviving full-length oil portraits of North American First Nations people painted from life. Three hundred years after they were painted these portraits remain a valuable record of early cultural and political diplomacy between the First Nations and the British Empire.

The Saskatchewan War Experience - Call for Participation


SDA Directed Digitization Project  

Call for Participation

The Saskatchewan Digital Alliance (SDA) is leading a Directed Digitization Project that will assist Saskatchewan libraries, archives, museums and other organizations in digitizing collections in any format (photos, documents, published materials, sound and film) that relate to the project theme The Saskatchewan War Experience.  This includes any military action that Saskatchewan residents have participated in as well as life on the ‘home front’.

Experience in digitization is not necessary, the required equipment and support will be provided by the Saskatchewan Digital Alliance.

2011 Canadian Museums Association Awards

Each year, the CMA awards celebrate and encourage excellence in the Canada's museums. Send in nominations by November 15, 2010 for the following awards:

    This award is a collaboration between the Canadian Museums Association (CMA) and the Canadian Federation of Friends of Museums (CFFM).

  • ICOM Canada's International Achievement Award.

Winners will be honoured at the Canadian Museums Association 2011 National Conference in London, Ontario from April 12-17.

Nomenclature 3.0 Community - Now Available!


Users of Nomenclature now have their own online community, the Nomenclature 3.0 Community.

Users can learn about Nomenclature 3.0, share news, view tutorials, ask advice, and submit proposals for additions and changes for future editions of Nomenclature.  Nomenclature 3.0, a product of the American Association for State and Local History, is a classification system for cataloguing man-made objects that is heavily used by Canadian museums with humanities collections.  The Nomenclature 3.0 Community is moderated by the members of the Nomenclature Committee, including Heather Dunn from CHIN, who are available to answer questions and review term submissions.

 

The Arts Professions Act Comes Into Effect


As of June 1, 2010, The Arts Professions Act requires written contracts to be used between professional artists of all types, including performers and anyone wanting to hire, engage or contract them for their work or performance.  The Act also recognizes the artist as a professional and emphasizes the importance of fair compensation. Online Course Available From CHIN - Introduction to the Documentation of Heritage Collections Course


An online course is available in the Professional Exchange from CHIN. The Introduction to the Documentation of Heritage Collections Course covers the basic concepts behind documentation of heritage projects, and is intended for both professionals and volunteers at heritage institutions seeking to learn the fundamentals of documenting collections, from planning through implementation, or to improve their knowledge in this area. It is particularly useful for providing introductory training to new staff or temporary staff assigned to special projects relating to documentation of collections.


You don’t need to register, the full course content is online, and you can access it whenever you want, leave and come back at any time.
