Edmonton Nature Centre Set for $2.45M Transformation

Edmonton Journal, Monday, February 1, 2010
(Information courtesy the CMA Clipping Service)

Edmonton’s 34-year-old John Janzen Nature Centre is about to get a $2.45-million makeover.

“We’re not just renovating. We’re building a whole new gallery,” said Don Hussey, vice-president of the Edmonton Nature Centres Foundation. “We have to compete with the science centre and the museum. We want to develop a facility that will allow people to come down here to spend a full morning.”

The new Children’s Discovery Gallery will allow kids to climb up inside giant fibreglass trees to giant nests. There will be a whole prairie dog village with oversized tunnels, where children can play, said Hussey. And there will be a beaver exhibit that will allow them to crawl under flowing water and stick their heads up inside an oversized beaver lodge.

The 325-sq.-metre expansion will more than double the centre’s exhibit space. The new wing will also have green roof, planted with native flowers and shrubs, allowing visitors to climb up to enjoy the view. The city is funding $1.1 million of the project. Another $801,277 will come from the federal Recreational Infrastructures Canada program. The Edmonton Nature Centres Foundation has raised another $550,000, including grants from the Tegler Foundation, the Edmonton Community Foundation and the Allard Foundation.

The Discovery Gallery is scheduled to open in March 2011, with the green roof opening later that summer. The centre is to remain open for regular programming throughout the renovation.
The nature centre, which is on the south side of the North Saskatchewan River, next to Fort Edmonton, opened in 1976. While attendance has fallen in recent years, Hussey said the small nature museum is still “a wonderful resource for the whole community.”

“Kids can see things. They can hold things in their hands. It’s all right in front of them.”

New Canada Periodical Fund: The Impact on Arts and Culture Magazines

The criteria for receiving funding from the Canada Periodical Fund (CPF) will differ from the previous Canadian Magazine Fund (CMF) and the Publications Assistance Program (PAP: also known as the ‘postal subsidy’), which it is replacing as of April 1, 2010. Despite the fact that the CPF remains at the same funding level, the CCA reports there is considerable concern that one of the areas most affected by the new regulations will be literary and arts publications which fall under the 5,000 circulation level. While they will remain eligible for the Business Innovation component of the new Fund, they will lose the additional financial support they were receiving under the previous regime. One of the striking aspects of the new system is that the government has really streamlined the application process: most applicants will use a two-page application form that is very quick and easy to fill out. This includes most magazines that are currently participants in the PAP or CMF programs. This is obviously a good thing since the deadline for the Aid to Publishers Component is extremely short as applications must be in by February 19, 2010.
