Museums Association of Saskatchewan - Fall 2010 Education and Professional Development

Products Used for Display, Storage and Transportation
This two-day workshop provides an overview of products commonly used for mounting, displaying, and storing museum objects. Products covered include woods, papers, paints, plastics, textiles, etc. The use of silica gels and sorbents is discussed, and spot tests to identify some products are demonstrated. Options to avoid problems related to off-gassing or staining are provided. Teaching methods include PowerPoint presentations, examination of samples, group discussion, and a tour of a storage and/or exhibition area. Participants are invited to bring samples for discussion. Note that products used for treatment of objects are not covered in this workshop.

Museums and Community
The museum has the potential to be a cultural and social hub within the community - many museums already are! With a blend of theory and practice, this two-day course explores the changing place museums hold in our communities and emphasizes current practices when planning, assessing, and implementing museum-community initiatives. You will learn new skills and share ideas around determining community and audience needs, working with diverse groups, and developing a community engagement plan.

CMA Travel Bursaries
The Canadian Museums Association Travel Bursaries are available to assist museum professionals (including volunteers) to attend professional development activities.
